BRUS(STATIC) [upcomming]

Brus, first img.png

A young woman with much screaming for her attention learns how, with the help of TV noise, one can enter a meditative state that supposedly quiets one's mind, but which has unwarned downsides. This is Nikolina Riselius' second short film, completed late 2025.

Director's Statement:

This film has grown from a self-reflection, which also became a mirror for a wider societal condition. In an age of constant stimulation and endless distractions, the story explores how we ambivalently let media consumption trap us. Most dangerous is that it has reached a level where it just feels natural. I’ve constantly found myself bent over a screen, in need of something interesting, entertaining… an escape. Even with full awareness of the problem - “doomscrolling,” that quiet and willing trance to dream time away - there's a comfort in something that’s, for the moment, quick, easy, and inconsequential. It becomes a habit. It becomes a waking dream.

I wanted to convey the idea of entrapment, told through a character who literally gets stuck in her own mental prison. Grounded in everyday elements of media, screen devices, and the unending search for distractions, the film gradually descends into darker territory. As the story unfolds, reality frays at the edges, blurring the line between what’s real and what might just be imaginary.

I wanted to create something atmospheric and claustrophobic. This is a film, simple in its form, where it moves in a loop, mirroring the character’s - and many people’s - cycle. The minimal dialogue brought an interesting challenge, pushing visuals and sound to carry the weight of the storytelling. I hope the result is something both close and unsettling. A reflection of how easy it is to drift into a comfortable trap.

HÄR ÄR INGET(HERE IS NOTHING)

Här är inget, Thumb Nail.png

A brooding young woman wakes up in a gloomy, dream-like state where she is pulled between different memories and delusions that each lead her closer to the confrontation of a life-critical decision. This is Nikolina Riselius' second short film, completed early 2024.

(In Swedish, English subtitles)

Director's Statement:

I wanted to make this film because it spoke to me, storywise, thematically and also because the way, the structure and the setting of the film interested me. The choice of having it take place in a dream setting allowed it to go places it otherwise couldn’t. I’ve drawn inspiration from a multitude of mediums, films, papers, blogs, music, etc discussing the themes of this film and then brought a piece of myself into it. The story comes from a place of uncertainty and fear. One that derives from a personal view and a wavering hope in that what we do and who we are matters and, despite it all, can forge a light in a dark tunnel.

The process of bringing the story to life had many challenges, as I had never done anything like it on this scale, and with backing and financing from Film i Västerbotten, the film was set on its way. This film was a collective effort and having this truly hard-working and engaged cast and crew is what made it possible. Throughout this process, I’ve learned so much about both filmmaking as well as myself, and despite the difficulties, I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

"With a beautifully written script, well-thought-out camera angles, and a gripping atmosphere, this film stands out. From the magical opening scene to the carefully crafted twist at the end, the jury was glued to the screen. The jury was captivated by all the different layers and details in the film, which also make it worth rewatching despite its heavy theme. The film's creator has succeeded in making a piece that stays with the viewer long after the film is over."

     - Jurry at Västerbotten's film festival 2024

”The Film Institute's award winner is a film that, with small yet effective means, creates a surreal depiction of the liminal space between life and death. Here, cinematography, editing, lighting, sound, and direction work together in a refined manner, employing inventive solutions that transport us through time and space. Together, these elements contribute to the creation of a uniquely cinematic reality where we, as viewers, are captivated by the film's dreamlike atmosphere.”

     - The Swedish Film Institute's motivation for honor award, The Novemberfestival 2024

”The film impresses with its bold and poetic storytelling, capturing a deeply human experience through a seemingly stripped-down narrative. The director has crafted a film that challenges traditional narratives, instead allowing the audience to embark on an emotional journey through subtle imagery, stillness and the unspoken. Through small but carefully chosen details, states of loss, belonging, and quiet longing are explored, all with a precision that enhances the emotional impact of the story.”
